In this module you’ll learn about setting yourself up as a writer, including where and when to write, how to start, the equipment you’ll need and how to get organised.

You’ll look at action stories versus reflective stories, then move on to examining each of the genres in turn, including romance, historical, detective, thrillers, war, humour, children’s fiction, science fiction, fantasy, lad and chic lit, horror, westerns and erotica.

Preparing to Write a Novel

You’ll be shown the tasks that you’ll need to complete before you actually start writing your novel. This includes mental preparation, technical preparation, market research, understanding novel structure, the basic ingredients, spicing up your story, themes and background research.

Story Ideas

This module introduces you to the various techniques you can use to find inspiration, plotting, sub-plots, flashbacks, foreshadowing and coincidence. Characterisation and Dialogue

You’ll learn how to write the perfect synopsis to go with your manuscript and what to do if you receive a rejection.

Self-Publishing

Marketing

This final module covers promoting yourself as a writer, not just your novel. You’ll look at the advantages of blogging, social media and other networking opportunities and how to make them work for you. And finally, we show you how to create a website that’ll impress your readers and any potential publishers and increase your sales.

The Online Learning Circle Certificate of Completion will be available for you to download and print out once you’ve successfully passed the five multiple choice self-tests. You’ll need to achieve a mark of 70% or above to pass the exam. However, if you don’t manage it the first time, it’s no problem, just go back, study some more and retake the exam when you are ready. In fact, we are so keen for you to complete the course successfully, you can take the exams as many times as you need to reach the 70% pass mark. Once you’ve achieved the required pass mark, you’ll be given access to correct answers for all the questions so you can see where you went wrong.
